BAM Residency 2025
i write a lot of letters that sometimes i dont send
In late August of 2025 I had come into a collection of envelopes my employer was looking to dispose of due to outdated branding. Not just hundreds but thousands of envelopes. I knew I had to make art with them. Bridges Art Movement (aka BAM) had a September artist placement fall through and so I took on a very short notice residency at their unit 5 storefront in the Drinkle Mall in Saskatoon.
Quickly, the art making became less about the envelopes and more about the intimate messages they carry. Words we mean to say, write with intention and then deliver - typically. I, however, write a lot of letters and then let the time pass, to the extreme- where the socially acceptable timeline to delivery the message is long past due. And instead of throwing them out, I keep them. Hoard them. Just like all the lovely hand written letters and cards I receive from others.
The project reflected on the quiet, unfinished gestures of communication, the words we compose but keep, the messages meant for others that ultimately become conversations with ourselves. Through writing, print, and installation, I played with the emotional residue of (my) unsent letters. The tension between expression and restraint, vulnerability and privacy, and how these private acts of writing can still hold the power to connect, even when they remain unread.
